The Democratic Republic of Congo is located in Central Africa. It has had previous other names, but most familiar is Zaire. It is not to be confused with its neighbor the Congo or Republic of the Congo.
It is the 2nd largest county in Africa and the 11th largest in the world based on land mass.
In 2006 it was estimated that over 70% of the people lived in poverty. This isn't the poverty that we see around us. Our son will be guaranteed 2 meals a day once he is matched with us. 2 MEALS a day!!! That's great considering the options, but it's a poverty that I'm not sure I've even seen in 3rd world Paupa, New Guinea.
Our only disappointment so far is that we have been advised NOT to take Janaa with us. That has been a big thing for our family. Janaa wants to understand her brother's country. However, it is basically a 4th world country. There is much unrest and makes it difficult to safely take Janaa with us and concentrate on the needs for Caleb's adoption.
The really cool thing...French is the official language! (In a country with over 200 languages it's probably nice to have a common lanuguage.) Janaa's foster brother now speaks French. Since she was 5 she has wanted to learn French. We might have French speaking children instead of Spanish.
